Long Cheng plane in 1975
PLEASE NOTE: PHOTO BY DAVE KOUBA, SPECIAL TO THE PIONEER PRESS --- A C-46 cargo plane, flown by an Air America pilot, prepares to lift off during the U.S. government's evacuation of Long Cheng on May 14, 1975. About 2,500 Hmong made it out in the airlift. Eventually, about 340,000 Laotians and Hmong left for the refugee camps in Thailand. Tens of thousands of others did not make it across the Mekong river to safety.
